The Hierarchy of Control

Hierarchy of control analysis is the preferred way of controlling risk by design, substitution, redesign, separation or administration.

Graphic showing Hierarchy of Control

Based on this analysis, AUI is able to offer the most appropriate solution which will be tailored to meet your needs.

CONTROLS PRODUCTS
Elimination Identified during the site audit process AUI would, where possible, recommend the elimination of the height safety risk through redesign.
Substitution It would also be identified through the site audit if the elimination of risk through redesign is not possible. AUI would then recommend the substitution of components, processes or systems.
Isolation Again, if substitution is not possible AUI will recommend the isolation of the risk to workers, through the use permanent edge protection systems, and this could include walkways and/or handrails
Engineering Control If the hazard cannot be eliminated, substituted or isolated, an engineering control is the next preferred measure. AUI would in this case recommend the use of fall protection equipment which could include: anchor points, harnesses, lanyards (retractable), vertical & horizontal systems and access ladders.
Administrative This includes introducing work practices that reduce the risk, such as implementing measures to ensure that procedures, instruction, training and warning signs are in place to warn and protect persons exposed to falls. This could also include limiting the amount of time a person is exposed to a particular hazard. These controls should be used in conjunction with physical controls and appropriate supervision.
In some instances, a combination of control measures may be appropriate.
